#WriterWednesday with Author Sonia Johnston

Today's interview is with Author Sonia Johnston. Let's see what she has to share with us!!

AT: Where do you live? What’s your town’s claim to fame?
SJ: I live in Richmond, Virginia. I believe we’re known for having a lot of restaurants and grocery stores.

AT: Nothing wrong with being known for that! What genre do you write?
SJ: Fiction. Women’s fiction to be exact.

AT: One of my favorite genres! Are you a published author or aspiring to be published? If published, how many books are out there with your name on them?
SJ: I have two short stories published in two Brown Girls Books anthologies. My first shorty story, Hundred Dollar Money is featured in Single Mama Dating Drama. The other short story is Home for Christmas featured in All I Want for Christmas. I am currently working on a full length novel.

AT: Loving your story titles! What inspires you to write?
SJ: My imagination. Mostly anything. I don’t need a reason. I can’t help it.

AT: A born writer, eh? Name one book you wish you’d written.
SJ: There are so many, but I’ll go with something epic like, The Women of Brewster Place by Gloria Naylor.

AT: Excellent choice! What was the last book you read? Did you enjoy it?
SJ: The last book that I’ve read and finished is Lust by Victoria Christopher Murray. Loved it. I’m currently reading And Then There Was Me by Sadeqa Johnson and I’m loving it as well.

AT: I've heard good things about both books! Who is your favorite author? Why?
SJ: There are so many, but I’d have to say Terry McMillan just for initial inspiration. I’d been an avid reader and writer all of my life, but I went through a phase where I wasn’t reading as much. Then a friend gave me Mama and Disappearing Acts for a birthday gift. Those two books reignited a spark and I was back in action with both reading and writing ever since.

AT: Yes! I'm a huge fan of hers! Now for the fun questions! You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?
SJ: A shimmery fuchsia combination that I’d call Fairy Dust. Because fuchsia is my favorite color and I live and breathe for a good sparkle.

AT: Love it! What would your autobiography be called?
SJ: Almost There

AT: Nice! Do you believe in love at first sight?
SJ: Absolutely!

AT: If a genie granted you three wishes, what would they be? (can't ask for more wishes)
SJ: Health, happiness, and a billion dollars. Please and thanks.

AT: Great wishes! Are you spring, summer, fall, or winter? Please share why.
SJ: I wish I was something seductive like summer or fall, but I am definitely perky spring.

AT: Tea or coffee?
SJ: Coffee!

AT: Tell us about your most recent/current project.
SJ: While I’m deep in the throes of revising my first novel, please check out one or both of my short stories in Single Mama Dating Drama or All I Want for Christmas.

Praise for Hundred Dollar Money: “Hundred Dollar Money had me in stitches with her main character’s self talk alone.”

Praise for Home for Christmas: “Home for Christmas had me at the very first sentence.”

AT: How can readers connect with you?
SJ: My website is www.sonialovestowrite.com and I’m on Facebook and Instagram as sonialovestowrite. Twitter: sonias_pov

AT: Any final words?
SJ: Thank you so much for the opportunity! Loved the interview, especially the fun questions. To the readers, please connect with me on social media and be on the lookout for my novel coming soon!

Ten Things You Didn’t Know About Author Danyelle Scroggins

One thing is for sure, if you know Author Danyelle Scroggins, you know that it is hard for her to keep secrets about herself. Danyelle has a no secrets concerning her life and most people do not understand how she could write about such personal details of her life and not be ashamed.
After this, you may just understand her a little better and have some more nuggets to add to your Scroggins knowledge bank.
Here is a list of ten things to help you discover the truths about her and her life.

1. At age 10, she decided she would never be blackmailed.
As a girl growing up, she watched the soaps with her mother. After seeing the effects of blackmail and realizing the secret still gets out, Danyelle decided at a young age to just tell on yourself. Ha-ha! Some might say, “That’s crazy.” Nevertheless, to her, it is the very reason her ministry book spoken, and written words thrive. God gave her method to this madness years later…You Revealed So That Others May Be Healed.

2. A teenage mother who still adores children.
Although she never saw herself as a parent but always had a knack for getting the best out of children. It was not until she became a teenage mother that she totally became a magnet for children: her very own and others. Danyelle said, “My daughter Raiyawna became the saving grace for my flesh because I never wanted my daughter to grow up feeling some sort of way about my moral choices. I wanted her to look up to me and allow me to be her first role model.” Well, it worked because not only is she the role model to her daughter, she is to her two other children, four godchildren, and a slew of others who call her, Mom.

3. At age 12, she had her first marital counseling session.
The mother of her friend was going through relationship challenges, and Danyelle began to tell her some things she could do to make things better in her relationship. WOW! Now she counsels couples on a weekly basis concerning marriage.

4. Her first job was at McDonald's.
At age 16, she worked at McDonald's for two weeks and ended up walking out of the job when some unruly teens trashed the restroom.

5. Now&Later candy is her favorite.
Give the chick a piece of Now&Later, and you will be her best friend for life.  She loves all flavors, but green apple is her absolute favorite.

6. She is obsessed with the Golden Girls and stills to this day gets in a rerun or two weekly.
Her favorite character is Blanche Devereaux, played by Actress Rue McClanahan because she shows how she would be if Jesus had not saved and turned her life around.

7. She was never committed to anything until she became a pastor.
She fancied being able to do whatever she wanted whenever she wanted to and just when she thought she was celebrating life her way, God called her into ministry, which eventually led to becoming a pastor. Danyelle believes that she had never gone to anything faithfully, not even school, without becoming bored and eventually dreading to go until she became a pastor. Now, it nearly hurts her heart to be absent from a Sunday morning service.

8. Got saved not in church but on a 747 between LAX and Tokyo International.
It was up in the sky where she asked God to come into her heart and save her soul, and He did just that. She got off the plane with a new mission and a new determination.

9. The older sister who acts as the second mother.
Her three siblings are younger, but all know just who to call whenever they need someone to call in a favor from the Lord for them.

10. Prayer time for Danyelle is more like watching a few prime time shows.
She prays a lot; this discipline has made her life more fulfilled and joyful.

Excerpt
Nikiya “Nikki” Barnett
Nikiya Barnett, known to shop patrons and friends as Nikki, was eager to tune in to RFRT with Sister Sappora Ink. The blog talk show previewed for the first time the past week, rating high and considered a hit by reviewers. As far as Nikki was concerned, the world needed someone who would tell the truth, live the truth, and share the truth, even if it were a blog talk show host.
As explained, Sister Ink answered questions about relationships, and although honest, she was raw. Against her will, Nikki listened to blog talk shows often blaming the desire to be a good best friend for this phenomenon. A couple of them were worth listening to, but some were uninformative and a useless waste of time. The hosts were inexperienced or too pretentious to explain life’s circumstances with realness and clarity. They failed to solve problems or share foundational truths from the Gospels, as Chelle declared Sister Ink did.
For the first time, Nikki’s curiosity about a show’s review ignited interest and Nikki refused to miss it. Intent on judging for herself perhaps sparked the motivation. It may also have been the desire to understand how she lost the love or her life or the need for spiritual advice. Either way, Nikki would be in the front of the computer, with an open mind centered on Sis. Ink.
The only dilemma was making it home on time. Nikki’s solution may not have been perfect but it was plausible. She drove 85 in and 70 mph zone, praying the angels would blind the police. The inability to afford another speeding ticket should have detoured Nikki from breaking the law, not to mention how dumb it would be to get a ticket resulting from rushing to hear a talk show, but it didn’t. With long hair weave blowing, as the wind whipped through the windows of the car, Nikki uncaring and unconcerned bobbed and sang along with the music. We are conquerors, conquerors.
Driving fast, the “zooming” of the other passing vehicles warranted a rear view mirror check. Dang Nikki! The thought was not a result of a police approaching, but the reality of looking at a calescent mess. Nikki snickered, but noticed the children in the car to the left laughing and pointing their fingers. Nikki licked at the children and then sped past them.

“Activating Your Gifts Workbook”

What Is This Workbook Designed To Do?

This is the first workbook in the “Awakening Series: Activating Your Gift.” It is designed to aid you in identifying your gift that God has put inside of you. The goal of this workbook is to make you feel uncomfortable in operating in the same place. My prayer is that it causes you to want to shift from a place of being complacent, and challenge you to be exactly what you are supposed to be; no longer just existing, but thriving and living an abundant life. It is designed to make you look at yourself, identify what you enjoy, and allow you to dream again. It is designed to assist you with letting some things go that may be blocking you from your successful future and a life of abundance. The Activation Process is about development and growth. It is about getting to know your gifts and strengths. Realizing that you already have exactly what you need to be successful, you must learn how to activate it. The ultimate goal is to operate in a career that you absolutely love, create an organization that changes the world, and become the person that you are destined to be. When you break down the Activation Process, the first step is to identify what your gifts and strengths are. That is the focus of this workbook. You must identify what makes you happy and what brings you joy. The definition of “Identify” means to establish or indicate who or what (someone or something) is. This is the first step to beginning your journey. Once you identify what your gift is, you use the tools provided to get into action and activate it. This is where you research, develop, figure out your target markets, build your customer base, and execute. This definition of “Activation” is to make (something) active or operative; to convert (a substance, molecule, etc.) into a reactive form. The last piece of the Activation Process is where you maximize your gifts and strengths in a way that allows you to earn an income. This is where the sky is the limit for you. The definition of “Maximize” is to make as large or great as possible; to make the best use of.

Excerpt
Transformation . . .

I want to challenge you to take a look at yourself and identify what is keeping you from reaching your highest destination. What is hindering the gift that is inside of you from being ignited and birthed? I want to see you transform from the inner to the outer. The definition of “transform” is to make a thorough or dramatic change in form, appearance, or character. Let’s choose today to begin transforming your thoughts, views, and actions, so that you can begin to identify, activate, and maximize the gifts that have been lying dormant. I have observed many entrepreneurs who start businesses and have great success . . . until life throws them a curveball. When entrepreneurs fail to deal with the personal issues that seem to be holding them down, it is possible that they will fall and never get up. These issues, situations, and relationships are like road blocks hindering them from truly activating the gifts that are stored inside of them. We must learn how to personally develop, declutter, and grow to change our situation and create a life of abundance. My goal is for you to activate your gift and become the 360 degree person that I know you can be. Your gift is waiting patiently to be ignited, birthed, and developed.

Bejeweled #Book Tour

BEJEWELED: WHAT A TANGLED WEB WE WEAVE

Olivia’s dreams have finally begun to come true, as she marries the man who’s held her heart for twenty years. Her beauty salon is prospering, and she has begun rebuilding her team, after seeds of discord were sowed and bonds were broken. Everything is beginning to look up, or so she thinks. When a scandal is leaked to the media, Olivia’s dream of expanding is in jeopardy. She must step up and play hard ball in a game with which she’s unfamiliar.

Nikki had dreams of building a beautiful family with a loving husband. But after looking at the shattered pieces of her broken life, she is losing hope and desires more. She wants more than the shame of barrenness, and more than physical abuse from his drinking binges. One phone call gives her courage to escape the deadly clutches of her husband. Yet, when she finds strength in another’s arms she finds herself spinning more lies. Nikki’s web of deceit is going to cost all those who are close and it could just cost her, her life.

When deception is the name of the game, who all will have to share the pain?

Excerpt:

“Mrs. O, can I talk with you for a moment?” she asked, hesitantly stepping into the kitchen.

“Sure,” Olivia said, washing a knife in the sink. She had just prepared a fruit salad for a late night snack. She set the knife back into its place in the knife block on the marble countertop. Grabbing the bowl of fruit, she took two black glass bowls out of the overhead cabinets and walked to the table.

“Come on and have a snack,” she offered, placing the bowl before Nikki.

“I wanna thank you for all that you’ve been doing for me. I haven’t told my mom about the episode at the reception yet,” she stated somberly.

“How come?” Olivia asked, ladling fruit from the large mixing bowl into the bowl in front of Nikki.

“Thanks,” Nikki grabbed her spoon and speared a pear and twirled it around in the fruit juice at the bottom of the bowl. “Well, as you can probably guess, my mom and sister don’t really like my husband.”

“I’m sure they don’t dislike him, Nikki. They probably just do not like what he puts you through. That would have to be tough on any family.”

“I know, but it makes it hard for me to go and talk to them. I feel like they’re judging me every time I do, and the only thing they can say is, leave him.” She popped the pear into her mouth. Staring off into space, she thought of the last conversation she had with her mother about Carlos, which didn’t go over well.

“Have you shared with them how it makes you feel when they do that?” Olivia asked.

“Uh-uh,” Nikki replied, swallowing the last of her pear, “it don’t matter. They won’t listen, anyhow.”

“I see. I think you want them to just hear you out and keep their opinions to themselves, support you, right?”

“Well, that would be nice. But anyway, like I said, I wanna thank you for being here for me. But my time is up now,” Nikki stated as she stared down into the bottom of her bowl, refusing to meet Olivia’s eyes.

“What do you mean, your time is up? You know I told you that you were welcome to stay for as long as you needed. If you want to get help, I’ll do that; if you want to move out into your own place, I will help you with that, too. I don’t want you to feel rushed into anything, or like you have a time limit on you, because you don’t. I just—”

“No, no, it’s nothing like that, Mrs. O, it’s just…it’s time for me to go home.”

Olivia raised one eyebrow and swallowed past the lump in her throat before speaking. “Home?” she asked in a shocked tone, as if she didn’t know there was such a place.

“Yes. Home. I’ve been gone long enough,” Nikki stated, “and Carlos and I talked, and he thinks we can work this thing out. He’s apologized so many times. And I miss him, you know?”

“Mm-hmm,” was all Olivia said. She placed her fork into her bowl and clasped her hands under her chin.

Nikki turned away from the look of disappointment that she saw reflected there. She could take anger, attitude, rejection, and even sorrow. But disappointment, she could not handle.

“Look, I’ve been gone from home for a while now. I’ve stayed with Rory a couple of nights. Then I stayed at my sister’s one night, until I couldn’t take her pressing me about why I had left home. Then I came here with you. I’ve never been gone from home this long before. I think he realizes how serious I am.”

Receiving no response from Olivia, Nikki scooted her chair back from the table. She took her bowl to the trash receptacle, emptied it, and washed it out. The entire time she stood at the sink, Olivia sat quietly at the table eating her fruit salad.

As Nikki walked to the entrance of the kitchen, Olivia finally spoke up.

“Nekana,” Olivia called. Nikki stopped in her tracks. No one except her mother called her by her given name. “You don’t have to bask in it just because it was given to you.”

“Huh?” Nikki turned around with a scowl on her face. She had no clue what Olivia was talking about.

“Your name. Surely you know it means ‘sorrow.’ But you don’t have to carry that weight on your shoulders, anymore.” Olivia released a weighted sigh before going on. “Baby girl, when you turn it over to the Lord, He delivers you and gives you peace and joy. His word says: ‘And the ransomed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.’ Nikki, it’s time for you to hold your head up and stand strong. Reclaim your life. Do what you must do to be the strong, beautiful woman that you are. Trust in God, and stop fighting this battle you call life. I’ve known you for five years now, and you’ve been sad every one of them.

“Where is your joy? Where is your strength? Where is your courage? Stand up for Nekana Vincent, because no one else is capable of doing it but you. You’ve got Wesley running around here, trying to protect you. You’ve got Carlos acting a fool and taking you through hell over his drinking and jealousy. Then you’ve got your mama and sister trying to dictate every step of your life and placing their expectations on you. And if you let any one of those people down, you’re scared you will fail. You’ve already failed, because you’re trying to please too many people. Stand up for one person…you. Stop being the victim, Nikki. Fight! Fight! Damnit, fight for your life!” Olivia had come to a stand behind the table and was hitting the table with her fork with every sentence she said. She stood trembling with anger.

Seasoned with Grace #Blog Tour

Are you ready for a dose of Grace? She’s a beauty and the beast, which one will prevail in her life?

About the book:

Sentenced to probation, thirty-year-old, supermodel Grace King must put her plans of transitioning into acting to extend the longevity of her career on hold. Desperate to keep a close eye on Grace and his job Grace’s ambitious lawyer, Ethan Summerville has her complete community service in the last place Grace wants to be. His church.

Instead of God, Grace finds a “chocolate drop” of a man—Brother Horace Green. However, Horace isn’t looking for a supermodel. He wants his woman saved and sanctified, but Grace has never met a man who has been able to resist her. Will Horace compromise his faith for a taste of fortune, fame, and Grace?

While Grace focuses on the pursuit of passion Ethan finds one director willing to take a risk and cast Grace in his debut film, but this role fits Grace all too well. Will this film revive Grace’s relationship with God and her career or bring her closer to destruction?

Excerpt (Exclusive):

Having a husband was no longer a necessity for most women. There were plenty of women opting to be single parents today. No sir, that ain’t for me, Grace decided, watching a woman lug a stroller in one hand and a baby in the other down the steps of a brownstone. She preferred the stability, the help, and the warmth that a man can bring over independence. The only problem Grace had besides being involved in one too many public brawls was finding a husband, now that Candace had Ethan under what seemed to be some kind of love spell. Being forced to spend all of her time serving food at Mount Carmel was not conducive to finding a mate either.

“Grace! Grace!”

Grace stopped walking and scanned the dust and scaffolding that she heard her name coming from. Brother Horace emerged from between some scaffolding with his bulky arms on display in a sleeveless grey shirt. Most of his clothes were covered in splotches of white paint and a coating of dust.

“Nice jacket,” he said as he ran his fingers down the lapel of the jacket.

No one was allowed to even breathe on her custom made Balenciaga motorcycle jacket yet all she could think about was how cute Brother Horace looked in his hardhat.

“What are you doing walking around here with no bodyguards?”

“Do you think I need someone to guard my body, Brother Horace?” Grace added a little extra arch to her back.

Smiling, Brother Horace removed his hardhat giving Grace direct view of his sumptuous brown eyes. “With a body like that someone should be watching you.”

“Brother Horace.” Grace lightly slapped him on the chest, fabricating a look of innocence. “Are you being fresh?”

“Yes, I am. I’m saved not dead. I know a good looking woman when I see one.”

“Wow.”

“Don’t act so shocked. I know you know you’re one of God’s greatest endeavors,” he said, licking his lips. “I’d like to see more of you, Grace.”

“Yeah, I’ll see you on Wednesday at the pantry.” While his directness and confidence aroused the butterflies in Grace’s stomach, there were two big warning signs that flashed before her eyes. One, his bank account was way too low, there’d be no romantic getaways to Golden Bay beach in Malta or suites at the Mandarin, and then there was the whole man of God thing. She’d already experimented with a romance in the church. It was the greatest romance she’d ever known and the worst heartbreak she’d ever felt. If Grace had been allowed to continue dating her then boyfriend, David instead of being forced to put his career in ministry before her feelings her wouldn’t be so full of distress right now, she thought. Loving a man of God wasn’t a roller coaster ride that she was about to willing step onto again.

“I have to go, Horace. I was on my way to meet a friend for lunch before you stopped me.” She walked away without saying bye and refused to look back even though she could feel his eyes locked on her every move.

My Review:

This is my first time having the pleasure of reading a book penned by Ms. Lockley, and it certainly won't be the last. Seasoned with Grace was well-written, flowed seamlessly, and was full of beautiful life lessons. The story follows Grace King, supermodel extraordinaire, as she continuously lives up to her bad girl, diva image. As the story progresses, Lockley peels back the layers of this complicated and sometimes unlikable character's life, revealing the roots of her actions. Writing about fictional celebrities and their lifestyles is tricky, but where others can be heavy-handed with name and brand dropping, Lockley ushers us into the world of the rich and famous effortlessly. We actually feel like a fly on the wall as the story unfolds.

This was a wonderful story, a must-read for lovers of Christian Fiction and believers in redemption and hope.

Time Out with Nigeria Lockley:
Love can be found in the most unlikely places. Today, I’ll share a secret with you, I met my husband in a nightclub. That’s right a nightclub. I wasn’t looking for love and I doubt he was either, but one chance meeting has grown into eleven years of marriage. I don’t recommend anyone lower their standards, however sometimes we need to just stop and give people a chance. Remember, a great tree is inside of tiny seed. You’ll have to read Seasoned with Grace to find out if Grace is willing to plant the seed.

#BookReview - Locked In Purgatory

Locked In PurgatoryLocked In Purgatory by Nakia R. Laushaul
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In Locked in Purgatory we follow the story of flawed family patriarch, Luther Bennett, and learn of the far-reaching effects of his life and how he chose to live it. This story is one that could easily be ripped from the pages of any real family's history today. This story evoked deep emotions and made me root for the most unlikely (and maybe even unworthy) of characters. With this novel, Ms. Laushaul has solidified her position as one of my favorite authors. This is a highly recommended must-read. One of the best books I've read in a long time.
