#WriterWednesday with Author EA Cook

This week's #WriterWednesday interview is with the very interesting EA Cook. Check him out!!





AT: Where do you live? What’s your town’s claim to fame?
EAC: Fort Collins, Colorado.
The Overland Trail runs along the West side of town at the base of the foothills of the Rockies. This was a major route during the western migration of the 19th century. Stage stops can still be found along the way

AT: Oh, wow! What genre do you write?
EAC: I’m a storyteller and my subjects are people, so, it gets messy. I’ve written a Western novel that is, intentionally, a crime fiction ancestor story that precedes the characters in my contemporary books. Another crime fiction story, Rusk, takes place in 1917 and so is historical fiction. I’ve also put together a collection of what I call Autobiographical Snapshots. I truly do write all over the map.

AT: Lol, so do I. I think that's common among true storytellers. Are you a published author or aspiring to be published? If published, how many books are out there with your name on them?
EAC: I’ve had a number of flash fiction pieces and short stories published in a few e-zines and in a pulp fiction paper magazine. I’ve self- published three books, a short story, and my autobiographical stuff.

AT: What inspires you to write?
EAC: I’m not a writer framing stories or books, but rather a storyteller trying to write it down for you. I have tales to tell if you’ll read them. Also, I have an unreasonable and insatiable need for the approval of strangers.

AT: Don't I know the feeling! Name one book you wish you’d written.
EAC: Treasure Island. It would have been darker.

AT: Oh, my...a more adult version, eh? What was the last book you read? Did you enjoy it?
EAC: Full Dark, No Stars – Stephen King.
Top notch. King’s best work is in his shorter writings.

AT: Definitely putting that one on my list...maybe. Who is your favorite author?
EAC: ...nope. I couldn’t begin to go down that rabbit hole.

AT: Lol!!!! Now for the fun questions! You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?
EAC: CrΓ¨me Brule’ Tan.
If one could capture that color of the crispy caramelization then they deserve a color. 

AT: Oh, that would be niiiice! What would your autobiography be called?
EAC: Faces, Places, and Pain.



AT: Sounds intriguing! Do you believe in love at first sight?
EAC: An unexplainable instant chemistry at least. 

AT: I can agree with that. If a genie granted you three wishes, what would they be? (can't ask for more wishes)
EAC: 
1. Life is hard enough and too short not to not know without a shadow of a doubt that God exists, so one wish is that he would speak audibly to me. It’s really the only decent thing to do considering the hours and years that I’ve spent talking to Him audibly. Until then, we’re estranged.
2. That I would be able to feed myself and wipe my own butt until the day that I die.
3. I want to control the time and place when I hear the word no.

AT: I believe there are many people who can identify with those wishes. Are you spring, summer, fall, or winter? Please share why.
EAC: All of the seasons here in Colorado are easy and they each have their charm, but I get grumpy above 85 degrees.

AT: So do I, lol. Tea or coffee?

AT: Tell us about your most recent/current project.
EAC: My newest novella – Further, went live at the end of May!

AT: Any final words?
EAC: Whenever I tell a story I want the reader to be swept away, intrigued. To feel the exhilaration that the protagonist does, to be able to smell and taste the darkness, or to feel the concrete in the back alleys or the wind blowing along forested trail. It’s my hope that the reader had a good ride.

Some folks miss the adventures in this short life and others will die rode hard and put away wet with a smile on their face. I’m writing for both and I hope your experience is like a 14-year-old boy seeing Jeremiah Johnson for the first time.

Today's #WriterWednesday interview is with Author LaQueisha Malone. Check her and her books out!!





AT: Where do you live?
LM: Arkansas 

AT: What genre do you write?
LM: I write in the genres of Poetry, Young Adult – Social Issues, Contemporary Adult Fiction, Non-Fiction/Self-Help

AT: Are you a published author or aspiring to be published? If published, how many books are out there with your name on them?
LM: I am a published author. I have four books with my name on them.

AT: What inspires you to write?
LM: I’m inspired to write by my daughter and everyday issues I see going on in people’s lives. God gives me something…I write about it.

AT: Name one book you wish you’d written.
LM: I wished I would have written any book by Nikki Turner. I love her writing.

AT: What was the last book you read? Did you enjoy it?
LM: Undisclosed Desire by Falon Gold.  I really enjoyed the story line. It was definitely not what I expected to happen.

AT: Who is your favorite author? Why?
LM: My favorite author is Nikki Turner. I love her writing style. She writes story that include strong black women, but they are not too tough to where you still can connect to their soft side. 

AT: Now for the fun questions! You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?
LM: LOL! I would be RED, because it is bold, bright, and in your face.

AT: Do you believe in love at first sight?
LM: Love at first sight is a tricky phrase. I want to believe in it, but I also believe that love needs time to flourish, because lust at first sight is even more dominant than love at times.

AT: If a genie granted you three wishes, what would they be? (can't ask for more wishes)
LM: 1) I’d wish for financial stability. 
2) I’d wish to write full-time pushing out bestsellers. 
3) I’d wish to start a program for children focusing on creative writing, art, mentorship, job placements, and other things to catch their interest while they are young.

AT: Are you spring, summer, fall, or winter?
LM: I am fall kind girl. Please share why. I love the fact that the temperature seems so even, and that the colors of brown, oranges, reds, and the hint of green life amongst the earth create a beautiful canvas painted only be God for my eyes pleasure. I always feel like I’m in another dimension. 

AT: Tea or coffee?
LM: Neither. I’m allergic to caffeine therefore, I can’t. But before I found out I was allergic I always had a nice cold Brisk Ice Tea.

AT: Tell us about your most recent/current project.
LM: I have a few projects I’m working. I’m working my magazine Strawberry-Lit Magazine, and I’m working finishing my Young Adult Fiction story. Excerpt below of my upcoming release:

It was afternoon and Mark was down in the Bishop’s study, to re-familiarize himself with the quarters. He perused articles of official business, neighborhood commitment registrations, grant proposal samples, invoices and other pertinent paperwork for daily operations like specialty planning, and necessary applications. Each drawer of Elder Jamerson’s desk filled Pastor Marshall’s mind with memories of a time when a young assistant would maneuver these quarters on one errand or another. Now Pastor Marshall was seated behind the desk of a man who, by his own right, was a father, mentor…savior. I will do everything in my power to maintain the legacy of Greater Faith.

The Pastor picked through the row of keys on his ring and found the little one for the bottom drawer. When he found it a subtle smirk of guilt at the invasion of Elder Jamerson’s privacy fell over him even though Mrs. Jamerson assured him that all of the Elder’s personal effects had been collected. Still, there was a symbolic quality to the drawer that felt to Pastor Marshall as if the study was still the late Elder’s quarters.

Mark felt a bit childish that his heart-rate accelerated when he inserted and turned the key. The drawer was empty save a worn buckle-strap bible, some stationary, and a small lock-box. The lock-box was empty, the bible’s pages littered with notes and comments on scripture. There was a pad which held a list of sermon-ready topics captioned with bullet points. Some of the words written Mark could almost hear Elder Jamerson exalt in his memory. The new Pastor made a mental note to utilize the note-pad and add to it. One thing was for sure, there was always praise-worthy topics. When Mark placed everything back into the drawer and closed it, on the floor was a worn piece of folded parchment.
The Pastor furrowed his brows. Had this piece of paper been there before? Had he missed it somehow while he was straightening up? He didn’t think so and instinctively pulled the drawer back open and reached under it. Wedged beneath the under-belly and the slide-bar was another piece of parchment that unfolded when he pulled it all the way out. His lungs depleted when he felt a sense of familiarity in the writing. But it wasn’t until he saw the signature at the bottom that he knew it was from his mother. The parchment fell from his hand to the floor.

It was as if a ghost hovered in the study. Visions intruded of his mother’s face, distorted from the criminal influence, skin oily and hair in disarray. He blinked back the disturbing memory and focused on the letters on the floor. With a trembling hand he picked them both up.

Time ticked slow as the new Pastor eyed the parchments lied on the desk-top. His conscious mind drew a blank while his subconscious fears prickled his imagination as the numbing span of time passed. With elbows on the desk, and his face held with moistened palms, his eyes scanned the stained pages. He couldn’t imagine what the connection could be between his mother and the only father he ever knew. As far as Mark could remember his mother was never a religious person, and with an energy consuming exhale his mind reached out into the dark. Then, as one hand rubbed at his eye, the other unfolded the first letter:

Dear Robert,
What are we doing? I don’t know how to feel, but I know what I feel. When I close my eyes all I see is you. I feel like the only sinner in the congregation so I am writing to say that I won’t be returning to volunteer. I simply can’t, not with what we’ve done. I thought I was a good girl, but how can I be when I feel an attraction for another woman’s husband? I don’t blame you. Maybe I will one day, but you do so much for so many people, and I can’t be the temptation that destroys an entire community’s faith. So I will never return to the church because if I do I’m afraid I won’t be able to control the way I feel for you. It is wrong, so good-bye my love…forever.

Teardrops dotted the bottom of the page as Mark’s core opened up. He felt a storm of confusion rage over him, betrayal. He turned to the other letter while his spirit was still numb, and he reached out a hand and grabbed the other parchment. He read, literally holding his breath:

Dear Robert,
I’m pregnant. I know it’s yours because I was a virgin before you, and have not been with anyone since. I am not telling you this because I want to trap you. I was going to stay away but now, I don’t know what I am supposed to do. I will keep my child. I am not doing this to punish you. I didn’t know what was wrong with me until it was too late. I wasn’t going to tell you, but I couldn’t keep something like a father’s child a secret. I don’t know what to expect from you, or what to accept, how could I? But I know that you don’t love me the way I love you. I am living in sin and will have to accept that. I won’t destroy you as I am destroyed. A part of me will always be waiting for you, but I know that we will not be. I can live with that. I can be strong for my child, our child, a son. I thought you should know that will name him Royce. Through it all I still don’t blame you. I know that you’re a good man. It was me who cast temptation, a silly girl who had no idea what I was doing. And our son will be my consequence. Funny how this letter of penance makes me feel as if I am confessing to you that you have a son.

The Pastor regretted reading the second letter as all strength drained from him. The Elder’s face came to mind, this time under a severely different light. What did these letter mean? But he knew exactly what it meant, yet acceptance stopped short before his mind allowed the reality of the ramifications.

Mark sat back. Flashes intruded of his brother, dead in a coffin; the enormity of a nearly empty funeral parlor; his mother in the front row, he and his sister on either side of her. The stillness of her pose, how her calm contradicted the tear lines and welling eyes that glistened under the light. Mark remembered when she stood, then buckled and fainted. Jamerson was there.

Was it Robert’s presence that took the consciousness from his mother? There was no answer for that. All Mark knew was what he recalled: The Elder phoning an ambulance before taking he and his sister for the four days it took his mother to show up. He remembered the chaos that broke loose between a mad woman and an empathetic Elder. But it wasn’t the church, it wasn’t the sense of responsibility that bred Robert’s patience toward his mother’s tirade. It was because of the secret. One hidden to ruin and protect. Mark immediately recognized why Jamerson was in his life and it sickened him with a desperation that bubbled into fury. The new Pastor, in one fell swipe, flew all the contents of the desktop to the floor with a shuffle and crash. It was his only movement yet he was out of breath and found it hard to catch.

Panic!

Mark shot up and the chair fell onto its back as he gained his footing. He dropped his palms flat on the table with a thud, eyes watching the surface dot with tear drops. He had yet to make a sound but wanted to blame, yell, accuse—

“Elder Marsh—” Gladys, one of the clergy, walked to the study when she’d heard the crash. Still beaming from such a beautiful sermon, Gladys was taken aback when she saw the condition of the Pastor, “What’s wrong? What happened?”

And that was when Mark knew that there was no one he could tell. As he looked into the clergy woman’s inquiring eyes he knew that this secret, one which had been kept for nearly forty years, was powerful enough to destroy the church as well as the community’s faith in the late Elder. A faith which had already begun to fade in Mark.

Gladys took a step into the study, “We’re here for you, Pastor.” She tilted her head, “Jerald and Charles are in the auditorium. Would you like for me to go and get them? Is there something that you would like to discuss with us?”

Mark wiped at his eyes, “No,” then he turned and saw the letter atop the mess on the floor. When he looked up he saw Gladys’ eyes scanning the contents, and what he intended to be a few encouraging words to put the clergy woman at ease while desperate to preserve the integrity of the church, came out all wrong, “Just get out, please.” Then, as he watched, the first layer of foundation, of comfort, faded from this woman’s eyes. But there was nothing else that he could say, nothing to justify or explain what set him off. So, with the agony of his revelation unable to be expressed, Mark, as slowly and as gently as he could, began to pick up the items that were spilled across the floor. The fears that his action conveyed potential imbalance were reinforced when he looked up and saw that Gladys was gone.

A #BeenSoLong Interview- Corey Sanders

In anticipation of the upcoming release of Been So Long 4 (CLICK HERE to pre-order), I'm posting a series of character interviews for your reading pleasure. First up is Corey Sanders. 

***WARNING: this interview contains major spoilers for those who haven't read the other books in the series!!!!***

Here goes!




Corey enters the room wearing a t-shirt and a pair of jeans. His clothes fit him well, maybe a little too well, because I find myself staring at him as he approaches me to shake my hand. I stand, and his huge hand engulfs mine. He's a hulking man with defined muscles that are clearly evident through his clothes. He is also very handsome. We take our seats and he smiles, revealing even white teeth.


Me: Well, Corey, how are you this morning?

Corey: Great, blessed to be here. How are you?

Me: I'm great. So good to see you. (Dang, he is fine!) So, let's get started. My readers have some interesting questions for you. Are you ready?

Corey: I'm always ready.

Me: (Somebody bring me a fan!) Okay, first question, How's your family?

Corey: (Relaxes in his chair) We're good. Living, loving, making it.

Me: Specifically, how's your wife, Mona-Lisa?

Corey: (Smiles) She's still Mona. She's hard to love, but I love her nonetheless.

Me: Inquiring minds want to know why you love her so much.

Corey: I honestly don't know myself. I just know I do. I love her with all my heart.

Me: Okay... here's a question from Arlisha Myrie: Are you still dealing with PTSD? If so, how are you coping with it?

Corey: (Straightens his posture and runs his hand over his neatly-cut hair) Well, yes... I'm still dealing with it. Um, I think it's something I'll always have to cope with, but with God's help I'm doing much better. I'm managing my anger. I'm proud of the progress I've made.

Me: I'm so glad to hear that! A lot of us were really worried about you.

Corey: Yeah... so was I. But God is good and faithful. He brought me through.

Me: Amen! How are you physically? Still recovering from your injury?

Corey: Oh, I'm healthy. Don't I look healthy to you?

Me: Hells, yeah! I mean, yes. You look great.

Corey: (Chuckles) Thanks.

Me: You are very welcome. Okay, Corey, here's another question from Ms. Myrie. How did you feel when you found out you actually fathered one of Mona's twins? Were you angry that it was kept from you for so long?

Corey: (Drops his head a bit, stares at his hands in his lap for a moment, then looks up at me.) To be honest, I was mad as hell. And at the same time, I was happy, grateful to know I had a child. I wanted to stomp a hole in Dr. Masood when Mona told me he knew all along, though, Shoot, I still want to beat him down for it. It was unfair as hell for him to do that to me! (Clenches fists) I almost missed out on Morgan's entire childhood. If he was here right now, I'd—

Me: Um, I see you're still angry.

Corey: Angry? Naw, I'm way past angry. I'm saved but God's still dealing with me on that one. That was foul. (He mumbles something I can't make out and then rather abruptly stands from his chair and leaves the room.)

Me: (I sit there and wonder if I should leave, too. Like, is the interview over? I'm nervously looking over my notes when he returns. This time, Mona is with him and takes a seat next to him.)

Corey: Um, sorry about that.

Me: It's okay. Are you-are you ready to move on?

Corey: (Grabs Mona's hand) Yes, I am.

Me: Okay. Hi, Mona. Thanks for joining us.

Mona: (Rubs her free hand over her and Corey's joined ones) No problem. I'm here to support Corey. (Leans over and kisses him)

Corey: (Smiles.)





Me: Okay. Here's another question: (I clear my throat) Is it hard playing a fatherly role to Wasif's sons knowing Mona still loves Wasif? (I drop my eyes and brace myself)

Mona: (Gasps softly) Mutters: Oh, hell.

Corey: I love kids, always have, I've also always wanted a family. Mona gave me that and I'm thankful. Is it hard to love Blair and Sahib? No, they're great kids, respectful. And they love me as much as I love them. They make fatherhood easy. Say what you want, but Mona is a good mother and she raised the twins to be good men.

Me: (I smile.) That's beautiful.

Corey: Thanks. As for the second part of that question, about Mona loving Wasif—

Me: You don't have to address that. (I don't want to witness another outburst)

Mona: (Looks like she wants to run from the room.) Thank God.

Corey: No, I'll address it. She loves me. I love her. That's all I'm concerned about.

Mona: (Seems to relax a bit)

Me: (Phew!) Thanks for sharing. So, Corey, can you tell the readers which of the books in the Been So Long series is your favorite?

Corey: I'd say the first one.

Me: Why?

Corey: Because that's when Mona and me reunited and became a family. I had been waiting for that for a long time.

Mona: (Leans in and whispers something in his ear)

Corey: (Flashes her a grin)

Me: All right, last question. What can readers expect from Been So Long 4?

Corey: Drama. What else?

#MondayMotivation - On Writing

When I began writing my first novel in 2009, I wasn't sure why I was writing. I just knew I liked it. I liked making up people and places and situations. No, actually I loved it. I loved it all--choosing names, creating entire families, making people fall in and out of love. 


So I wrote and wrote and wrote. I wrote book after book without even a thought in my head of sharing my stories. I liked reading them and that was good enough for me. I didn't share them with anyone, not even my family members. I was too afraid to because though I loved what I was creating, I was sure the rest of the world would hate my work or at the very least and the very worst, laugh at me. 


It took over a year for me to finally muster up the courage to share some of my work via a blog. Even then I posted the work but told no one about it. The few visitors I had must've just happened upon the blog. Then I added the blog link to my Facebook profile and a coworker read my excerpt and raved about it. I was shocked and hopeful. Another human being besides me actually liked what I wrote! That gave me the courage to share my work with other coworkers, friends, and relatives. The consensus was that the book was good and I should publish it. So, I did.  


It has been a little more than 5 years since I published my first book. This has been a wild ride of highs and lows. I am now a full-time author, supporting myself with book royalties and 
freelance editing and formatting jobs. This publishing journey has been both rewarding and disappointing at the same time. Some days, I wonder why I do this--work hard, lose sleep, and make sacrifices--and then throw my work out there in hopes it will be received well. Some days are full of so much anxiety it's unreal. Those days, I really and truly want to give up. Other times, I'm on cloud nine. I get to meet wonderful readers, some of whom I've made real connections with. I've met some wonderful authors I might never have known about had we not shared a love for writing. And then there is the fact that I get to make a living doing what I love. At the end of the day, the good outweighs the bad. That's why I continue to write through the disappointments. And if you are a writer, that's why you should keep writing, too.

What I Write




For those of you who don't know me, I am Adrienne Thompson, writer and independent publisher of 22 books and counting. I published my first book in July of 2011. My 23rd book will be released 2.16.16. I have been a full time writer since November of 2012.

I write stories about women (and a few men), African American women, flawed women, hurt women, broken women. Women society may see as undesirable and unlovable. Women who might not meet the mainstream world's standard of beauty, but who are beautiful to the men who love them. Yes, the women in my books find love, sometimes in the strangest places.

And the men that love them are usually handsome, sexy, fine. Because every woman deserves a fine man, doesn't she? Of course she does!

My books involve conflict, tragedy, hope, love, a little suspense, and from time to time, a little fantasy. Oh, and a heaping helping of reality.

No one is perfect, especially when it comes to my heroines.

Toni Morrison said, “If there's a book that you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it.” And that's exactly what I've done, time and time again. It's what I will continue to do.

God is always a major player in my books, because He is a major player in my life, always has been.

But my books probably couldn't be considered Christian Fiction per se, because my characters have sex--not explicit sex, but sex nonetheless. And they lie and cheat. And they have been known to curse a bit here and there.

My characters make mistakes, big ones. They think crazy stuff, say stupid things. Some are downright unlikable. Some of them are just not good people, and I think that's what I like most about them, because it makes them real.

Real.

And real people can be redeemed. That's the beauty of what I choose to write.

Like Mona-Lisa from Been So Long, whose life involves a different take on being the side chick.

Or Bobbie Brooks from Bluesday, who fights an addiction  she didn't even realize had a hold on her all while trying to piece her life back together.

Or Olivia Moy from See Me, who endures the unthinkable to protect her child.

Or Ivan from Home--one of the few man-centered stories I've written--who becomes the thing he hates most despite himself.

Or Carla in Better, who runs away from the one thing she needs.

Or Alex in Ain't Nobody, who makes a crazy decision that has a snowball effect she can't run from.

They are real.
They make mistakes.
...But they pay for them.

My books don't really fall into a known genre (If they did, I'd probably sell more books), so I kind of just place them where they almost fit. I write Edgy Inspirational African American/Multicultural Women's Romantic Fiction.

Yep, that's what i write... most of the time.

And there are some people out there that like it.

And I'm grateful for that.

#MondayMotivation - #NaNoWriMo: I'm a winner!!



I'm excited to share that I reached 50,001 words on November 21!! Instead of writing one novel for NaNoWriMo, I actually completed 2 novellas that are part of a new trilogy of romances I plan to publish in early 2016. 

NaNoWriMo was a wonderful experience and it helped me get back on track with my writing. If you're participating, comment below and tell me how you're doing and be sure to write on!!

Greetings, everyone!!

So, I've decided to do NANOWRIMO this year. This is a big decision for me because I am pretty much allergic to deadlines and page counts, but I'm gonna take a shot at it and here's why:

In the past, I've always put limits on myself, believing there are certain things I can't do--write to a deadline, write to a certain word count goal, write when I don't feel like, write without inspiration. Well, I've decided to work toward taking the limits off of my life as I believe it will take my writing to a new level and I also believe it's vital to the business side of writing that I am able to write to different things and in different situations.

So I'm taking the plunge!!

I attended a NANOWRIMO launch party this past Saturday and had a blast and now I'm really looking forward to the write-ins and camaraderie of trying to reach a common goal with other writers. The book I'll be working on is titled, No Pain No Gain, the second book in a new trilogy I'm writing centered around women over 40 finding love. I just finished writing the first draft of book one of the series and I am so excited about it!!

I plan to bring you all along on this journey with me so be on the lookout for updates!!

#WriterWednesday - Summer 2015 Writing Update



June was a busy, uber productive month for me and I couldn't be happier about it! I finished another piece of the Been So Long series puzzle, a companion novel that chronicles the life of Christina Dandridge, the mother of the main character in the series. The book was not easy to write and at times I wasn't sure if I would ever finish writing it, but I did and I am too thrilled about it!

Here's the blurb:

Born to an interracial couple in Arkansas circa 1960, Christina Dandridge’s life was tumultuous from the start with things only growing worse as the years passed. Wrought with abuse and abandonment, Christina’s life is a journey of ups and downs and trials and triumphs.

This is a companion novel to the Been So Long series, chronicling the life on Mona Lisa’s mother and setting the stage for the dysfunction that plagued the lives of both Mona-Lisa and her sister, Cleo.

What else am I working on?

- SeduΓ§Γ£o (Seduction): a prequel to Ain't Nobody which gives you a little insight into how Victor started his very unique career. This story is packed with a little heat and a whole lot of drama. I'm hoping to be finished writing it by the end of July with a projected publication near the end of the year.

- See Me, Too: a sequel to the novel, See Me, which catches the reader up on the goings on in Olivia's, Ben's, Jason's, and a few more old characters' lives while new characters are introduced. Old skeletons have lasting effects on many of the characters and there may be some new secrets revealed.

It's about 30% complete. Hoping to finish it in a month or two.


-Dragonflies (Fantasy YA Novel): Nerdy Nathan Park has a crush on Elleny Foster, so when he finds her in need of some tutoring, he uses the opportunity to get closer to her, but when she gets too close to him, his deepest darkest secret is revealed.  Can Nathan handle being exposed?

I've just scratched the surface of this book. Hope to have it completed in time for publication sometime next year.



I have several other book ideas floating around in my head, but I'm determined to finish these first.

I sat there and tried not to let my eyes glaze over as another young, attractive, African American female rattled off her qualifications to me in an effort to convince me to hire her as my administrative assistant since, unfortunately, I’d had to fire Alma. One night was all I was trying to give her. But after that night, she started strutting around the office like she owned the place, typed on the keypad of her cell phone more than she ever did the computer. I just couldn’t afford to keep her, or her attitude, around after I told her we were through.
So there I sat, just three months after hiring her, seeking her replacement, listening to Jazzmine, who was thicker than a six-pack of Snickers. As she rambled on about her experience in Atlanta, I penciled an “x” beside her name. She wouldn’t do at all. She was too fine. So were Kammera, LaShay, and Amber—fine, finer, and finest. I had to find someone unattractive to hire if I was going to keep any help around here.
I stood and shook her hand once the interview was over, gave her the “I’ll be in touch” lie, and settled back down in my executive chair. I loosened my tie and released a long, belabored sigh. More interviews tomorrow. I was just about to pray that a homely girl with impeccable organizational and typing skills would show up at my door when my cell phone rang. I recognized the area code but not the number. The call was coming from Arkansas.
My whole body stiffened. The only time I got calls from Arkansas was when my mother, who was suffering from advanced Alzheimer’s disease, happened to get ahold of the phone and hit the speed-dial for my number, and even then, she swore I was my daddy, and those conversations were awkward to say the least. If she wasn’t whispering sweet nothings to me, she was crying or cussing about some woman she was sure I/my father was with. The only other time I got a call was on my birthday, and that call came from my Aunt Erma. Well, it wasn’t my birthday, so it was more than likely my mother who’d probably gotten her hands on someone’s phone. And as much as I loved that woman (and I truly did) it was almost too painful for me to speak to her, knowing she had no idea who I was.

Author Interview: Barbara Joe Williams

Greetings!! Today I get to share my interview with one of my dearest author friends, bestselling author, Barbara Joe Williams. Read below to learn all about her and her wonderful books!!

"After I turned forty and experienced a mid-life crisis, I decided to face my fears."




AT: Where are you from? 
BJW: I was born and raised in Rosston, Arkansas.

AT: Where do you live now?
BJW: Currently, I live in Tallahassee, Florida. I’ve been here since 1983.

AT: Did you always know you wanted to be a writer? 
BJW: Yes, I’ve always wanted to write, but I was afraid to try. After I turned forty and experienced a mid-life crisis, I decided to face my fears.

AT: When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book? 
BJW: I started writing my first novel titled, Forgive Us This Day, in November 2003. Two months later, I had over two hundred pages. I shared it with ten friends and family members. They all loved it, and later on, I decided to get an editor to help me further develop the story. It was self-published in November 2004.

AT: How did you choose the genre you write in? 
BJW: Romance was an easy choice for me because that’s mainly all I’ve ever enjoyed reading. I also love reading stories about strong women so my books are classified as romance and women’s fiction.

AT: Where do you get your ideas? 
BJW: All of my ideas have come from everyday living and some of the people that I’ve met during my travels. I love writing about realistic characters and storylines.

AT: Name one book that you would categorize as a life changing read. 
BJW: It would have to be I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. I grew up in rural Arkansas like she did, and that book motivated me make my professional dreams come true. I still have my paperback copy after all these years.

AT: Who is your favorite author? 
BJW: My favorite author is Terry McMillan. Ever since I read Waiting to Exhale, she’s been my favorite.

AT: Name one book you wish you’d written. 
BJW: Waiting to Exhale. I would be rich today and living on the beach in California.

AT: Tell us about your latest book. 
BJW: My latest eBook is titled, A Cup of Barbara Joe. This book is a collection of things I’ve learned about life, marriage, motherhood and people from over fifty years of living. Some of these discernments and experiences have been shared on social media, but most of them have not. Find a comfortable reading chair and enjoy a strong cup of Barbara Joe.

AT: What advice would you give to aspiring authors? 
BJW: My motto is this: Writing is a hobby, but publishing is a business. Therefore, I would advise authors to learn as much as they can about the publishing industry before stepping (or jumping) into it. Once you’re published, you’re an entrepreneur. It’s up to you to market your product to the best of your abilities or hire someone who can.
