#SampleSunday - See Me, Too

Please enjoy another snippet from See Me, Too!!

He was a successful lawyer who, at sixty-plus years old, had passed retirement age but refused to retire. He loved his work, and since divorcing his wife of many years, he loved his life, too. But the guilt of what his son became, what his son was, ate at him on a daily basis. Therapy hadn’t helped him let go of the pain he experienced knowing he’d failed his only child. He dealt with the consequences of his actions nearly every second of every day—wondered if things would have been different had he dedicated more time to his family than he had his career. But back then, he’d felt an overwhelming desire to excel and succeed, to prove to his wealthy wife’s wealthy family that he was worthy of her hand. That he was more than a poor-white-trash Memphis boy from the wrong side of town, raised in a black community.
Even his love for David’s mother hadn’t been enough to make him change his ways. He’d taken the blessing of an unplanned pregnancy and used it to appease Jessica, to make her happy in some way. To this day he didn’t understand himself why he’d so desperately tried to be accepted into a family that looked down on him, or a wife he never really loved. He’d broken Mary’s heart when he took David from her. And at the same time, he’d sealed David’s fate. He’d ruined his brilliant son’s life.
He sighed, adjusted in his seat, and recited his therapist’s words in his mind: “You cannot change the past. You can only choose to make better choices in the present. That was what he’d spent the years since Olivia showed up at his office doing—helping others, giving his time and money to the David Moy foundation. But it didn’t feel like he was doing enough. At times, he wondered what would be enough to atone for what David did to Olivia. Would anything be enough?
He smiled as her name skated across his mind. The thought of the beautiful woman who had captured his son’s heart and become his muse always put a smile on his face. From the moment he laid eyes on her, he understood David’s obsession with her. His son’s words, which he had read countless times, came alive on the pages now that he had seen David’s Olivia in the flesh. There was definitely something about her, something that could drive men wild, make them want to possess her...

An #Interview with W Frank Mooney, Author of Cover

Greetings, everyone!! Let's get to know Author W Frank Mooney!!

Who is your hero?
My father. He was the foundation of my manhood, how I learned how to take care of my family, treat my wife, all of that.

Aww, that's sweet! If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
Probably on the east coast. I hate heat. I hate mosquitoes. I like nice clothes, and it’s difficult to be fashion-ready in high heat and high humidity.

I'm not a big fan of the heat here in the south, either, lol. What would you change about yourself if you could?
I would change my lack of trust in others. I usually don’t trust anyone to do anything; I’d rather do it myself. This becomes problematic because I get overwhelmed and hinder my own progress.

I have that issue, too. What really makes you angry?
Impatience. If you’re patient and assess the situation, a lot of unnecessary faults can be prevented.

I agree! What motivates you to work hard?
My family

Excellent motivation. :) What makes you laugh the most?
People. Watching people in their respective elements. It’s amazing how we deny our own predictability and human nature all while simultaneously fulfilling them.

What was the last movie you went to? What did you think?
Straight Outta Compton. I liked it. The film humanized the group and instead of making them a caricature or ignorant.

I really enjoyed that movie, too. Would you rather ride a bike, ride a horse, or drive a car?
Drive a car

What would you sing at Karaoke night?
Careless Whisper by George Michael, with an accompanying Schmoney Dance.

What two radio stations do you listen to in the car the most?
Power 92 Jams (Hip-Hop/R&B), but usually I just listen to various Pandora stations on my phone.

Which would you rather do: wash dishes, mow the lawn, clean the bathroom, or vacuum the house?
Mow the lawn

Tell us about your book.

Blurb:
What if good and evil existed for one another? What happens when people decide to take salvation into their own hands? What if Judas was all a part of the plan? Strange things are happening and all roads lead to a local cult by the name of Saints of Iscariot. The city of Little Rock, Arkansas, is under silent attack as Detective James Gilliam returns home for an unexpected turn of events.

In an effort to save a city along with his own sanity, he finds that even the best intentions still fall short of their mark.

Excerpt:
The girl paced steadily toward her destiny as her eyes welled with tears.  She moved through the crowd, focusing on the main stage with purpose behind each step.  The clarity of her duty toward her brothers and sisters in the great struggle for redemption and those who were not aware of their transgressions helped guide her decision.  Thoughts of her family flooded her conscious. They would have to understand. This was the will of God.

Through a crowd of careless patrons, she felt like she was walking into a slaughter.  She wore an orange sundress that accented her beautiful, sandy brown hair which reflected the final evidence of sunlight. Her breaths became more shortened as the distance between her current place and her destiny closed.  In her right hand was a silver blade that she held under her prayer beads. Her flip flops sounded off each time her foot left the ground.  She was almost there.

Climbing on the stage was the scariest part of the ordeal for her.  While the security guards were not looking, she snuck to the steps on the side of the stage.  With each step, her legs became heavier and her stomach began to turn flips as she thought about the task staring her in the face.  There was no turning back.  As she made her way to center stage, the crowd cheered loudly.  All of the voices directed toward her eased her mind. The people were ready to be exposed to an experience they would never forget.  In her mind, they were motivating her to become what they needed.  She raised her hand in authority to hush the chaos.

“Thus said the Lord,” she shouted in a strong voice, “present your body as a living sacrifice.”  The security officers did not know if this was a part of the show.  They waited.

With that single proclamation, she touched the cross on her back.  It was completely healed.  She’d finally reached redemption.  A tear slowly formed and drifted down her bronze cheek.  After a final prayer, she raised the blade to her throat.

Bejeweled #Book Tour

BEJEWELED: WHAT A TANGLED WEB WE WEAVE

Olivia’s dreams have finally begun to come true, as she marries the man who’s held her heart for twenty years. Her beauty salon is prospering, and she has begun rebuilding her team, after seeds of discord were sowed and bonds were broken. Everything is beginning to look up, or so she thinks. When a scandal is leaked to the media, Olivia’s dream of expanding is in jeopardy. She must step up and play hard ball in a game with which she’s unfamiliar.

Nikki had dreams of building a beautiful family with a loving husband. But after looking at the shattered pieces of her broken life, she is losing hope and desires more. She wants more than the shame of barrenness, and more than physical abuse from his drinking binges. One phone call gives her courage to escape the deadly clutches of her husband. Yet, when she finds strength in another’s arms she finds herself spinning more lies. Nikki’s web of deceit is going to cost all those who are close and it could just cost her, her life.

When deception is the name of the game, who all will have to share the pain?

Excerpt:

“Mrs. O, can I talk with you for a moment?” she asked, hesitantly stepping into the kitchen.

“Sure,” Olivia said, washing a knife in the sink. She had just prepared a fruit salad for a late night snack. She set the knife back into its place in the knife block on the marble countertop. Grabbing the bowl of fruit, she took two black glass bowls out of the overhead cabinets and walked to the table.

“Come on and have a snack,” she offered, placing the bowl before Nikki.

“I wanna thank you for all that you’ve been doing for me. I haven’t told my mom about the episode at the reception yet,” she stated somberly.

“How come?” Olivia asked, ladling fruit from the large mixing bowl into the bowl in front of Nikki.

“Thanks,” Nikki grabbed her spoon and speared a pear and twirled it around in the fruit juice at the bottom of the bowl. “Well, as you can probably guess, my mom and sister don’t really like my husband.”

“I’m sure they don’t dislike him, Nikki. They probably just do not like what he puts you through. That would have to be tough on any family.”

“I know, but it makes it hard for me to go and talk to them. I feel like they’re judging me every time I do, and the only thing they can say is, leave him.” She popped the pear into her mouth. Staring off into space, she thought of the last conversation she had with her mother about Carlos, which didn’t go over well.

“Have you shared with them how it makes you feel when they do that?” Olivia asked.

“Uh-uh,” Nikki replied, swallowing the last of her pear, “it don’t matter. They won’t listen, anyhow.”

“I see. I think you want them to just hear you out and keep their opinions to themselves, support you, right?”

“Well, that would be nice. But anyway, like I said, I wanna thank you for being here for me. But my time is up now,” Nikki stated as she stared down into the bottom of her bowl, refusing to meet Olivia’s eyes.

“What do you mean, your time is up? You know I told you that you were welcome to stay for as long as you needed. If you want to get help, I’ll do that; if you want to move out into your own place, I will help you with that, too. I don’t want you to feel rushed into anything, or like you have a time limit on you, because you don’t. I just—”

“No, no, it’s nothing like that, Mrs. O, it’s just…it’s time for me to go home.”

Olivia raised one eyebrow and swallowed past the lump in her throat before speaking. “Home?” she asked in a shocked tone, as if she didn’t know there was such a place.

“Yes. Home. I’ve been gone long enough,” Nikki stated, “and Carlos and I talked, and he thinks we can work this thing out. He’s apologized so many times. And I miss him, you know?”

“Mm-hmm,” was all Olivia said. She placed her fork into her bowl and clasped her hands under her chin.

Nikki turned away from the look of disappointment that she saw reflected there. She could take anger, attitude, rejection, and even sorrow. But disappointment, she could not handle.

“Look, I’ve been gone from home for a while now. I’ve stayed with Rory a couple of nights. Then I stayed at my sister’s one night, until I couldn’t take her pressing me about why I had left home. Then I came here with you. I’ve never been gone from home this long before. I think he realizes how serious I am.”

Receiving no response from Olivia, Nikki scooted her chair back from the table. She took her bowl to the trash receptacle, emptied it, and washed it out. The entire time she stood at the sink, Olivia sat quietly at the table eating her fruit salad.

As Nikki walked to the entrance of the kitchen, Olivia finally spoke up.

“Nekana,” Olivia called. Nikki stopped in her tracks. No one except her mother called her by her given name. “You don’t have to bask in it just because it was given to you.”

“Huh?” Nikki turned around with a scowl on her face. She had no clue what Olivia was talking about.

“Your name. Surely you know it means ‘sorrow.’ But you don’t have to carry that weight on your shoulders, anymore.” Olivia released a weighted sigh before going on. “Baby girl, when you turn it over to the Lord, He delivers you and gives you peace and joy. His word says: ‘And the ransomed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.’ Nikki, it’s time for you to hold your head up and stand strong. Reclaim your life. Do what you must do to be the strong, beautiful woman that you are. Trust in God, and stop fighting this battle you call life. I’ve known you for five years now, and you’ve been sad every one of them.

“Where is your joy? Where is your strength? Where is your courage? Stand up for Nekana Vincent, because no one else is capable of doing it but you. You’ve got Wesley running around here, trying to protect you. You’ve got Carlos acting a fool and taking you through hell over his drinking and jealousy. Then you’ve got your mama and sister trying to dictate every step of your life and placing their expectations on you. And if you let any one of those people down, you’re scared you will fail. You’ve already failed, because you’re trying to please too many people. Stand up for one person…you. Stop being the victim, Nikki. Fight! Fight! Damnit, fight for your life!” Olivia had come to a stand behind the table and was hitting the table with her fork with every sentence she said. She stood trembling with anger.

A Spring Affair Release Day Blitz

Blurb:

Though they've yet to meet face to face, Maya has had a secret crush on Xavier, the man who owns a wine café that the winery she works for distributes to. But being that Xavier is involved, she'd never reveal her feelings.

Xavier's previous relationship has left him wrung out emotionally. Needing to get away for awhile, he decides to drive to Napa and visit the winery that produces one of the best selling wines at his café. And finally get the opportunity to meet the woman with the sweet little voice.

One email and four little words stands to flip their love lives on its head and when Maya and Xavier meet for the first time, both are blindsided by the attraction they feel for one another.

Springtime and wine make a beautiful backdrop for two people on a romantic journey to love...

Excerpt:

Maya stood there in the wine cave staring at Xavier.
"'We'," she said. "As in...you and me?"
She watched at the corner of his mouth quirked up slightly, before he released a deep chuckle.
"Yeah," he said. "That's the idea, unless there is some rule that says you can't drink right now?"
"My boss doesn't mind if we taste the wines along with our tourist, as long as we use the spittoon. But it is after hours and everyone has left for the day."
"So what do you say?" he asked with a smile. "All these years we've talked on the phone and emailed each other, it would be nice to sit down and finally get to know more about you."
She wanted to get to know him better as well.
Then why are you hesitating? her mind screamed.
She looked over her shoulder at the exit, then back at the table.
"I'm sorry," he said when she still didn't answer. He looked at his watch. "I suppose now I'm being presumptuous. Here I am asking you to sit down and share this wine and food with me and technically you're suppose to be off the clock already. I didn't think that maybe you already had plans with your husband."
Maya grinned at Xavier's inquisitive tone.
It was more than a little obvious that he was fishing for her relationship status. Grinning, she held up her hand to reveal her bare ring finger. "I'm not married."
"Boyfriend?" he corrected.
She shook her head, and she felt her grin widen. "I'm single."
"Then I'm not stealing you from anyone important."
"It doesn't appear that way." Finally Maya smiled and said, "Sure I would love to sit with you."
They moved over to the table and Xavier held a chair out for Maya. As he pushed her chair in after she sat, she felt his finger inadvertently brush against her shoulder. It amazed her that even the lightest touch from this man made her body come alive.
She expected him to go around and sit on the other side of the table, but was surprised when he pulled out the chair right next to hers and sat down.
"So, what do we have here?" Xavier asked, rubbing his hands together in anticipation.
Trying to ignore their knees touching under the table, Maya pointed to a white wine.
"This is a chardonnay, much like the one you tasted from the barrel. Of course this one is ready for consumption," she said with a smile.
They both reached for the bottle at the same time and she stopped as Xavier's large hand grabbed it first.
"Do you mind?" he asked.
"By all means." She held up her glass so he could pour some, then he filled his own glass.
"I assume we're pairing this with the brie cheese over there?" he guessed as he sat the bottle back down.
"You're absolutely right. It's actually from a local cheesemonger not too far from here." She cut them both a small slice of cheese. "You know your pairings."
"I would hope so, otherwise business would be terrible at my café."
"What made you decide to open a wine café?" Maya asked. She had always been curious. "Why not just open a wine shop?"
"Because there is a wine shop every few blocks. Not to mention you can get wine from just about any store. With the wine café, people can also experience the joy of learning about wines as well as different foods that pair well with them."
She loved his answer. And it was obvious that he was a true wine lover. As they went through their flight of wines, tasting several varieties, she watched as he described each one in great detail, as well as how each item of food was enhanced by the wines.
As they finished up their tasting, Xavier wiped his mouth and sat his napkin down on the plate in front of him.
"That was amazing. I can't thank you enough again for doing all of this."
"Even though it was meant for you and someone else?" she asked sheepishly.
Xavier turned and looked Maya directly in the eyes. "If it was meant for me to be here with someone else, I would have been here with someone else," he said with a self-assured tone.
There was something in his voice and the look in his eyes that made Maya's heart race.
She broke their eye contact and stood, gathering up the dishes. "I still feel terrible. Setting up this whole romantic scene must have brought up some strange feelings considering"
"Maya." Xavier stood, gently grabbing her arm, to stop her from her task of cleaning. "The only thing I've felt tonight is joy at spending time with you. In fact..." he removed his hand from her arm and hooked his thumbs into the loops of his jeans. "...I was wondering since the winery is closed tomorrow, do you have any plans tomorrow?"
"Uh, no. I don't have any plans tomorrow. You're not going to visit anymore wineries?"
"I visited all of the ones on my list yesterday and today. This was the final stop for me. I wanted to save the best for last," he said, and she felt like he was referring to more than just the winery.
"I know this may seem fast, and forward. And I'm kind of out of practice with all of this, but...I've enjoyed our time together today and I want to see you again. So I was wondering if you would have lunch with me tomorrow, before I have to head back to Sacramento."
Oh. My. God.
After years of fantasizing about this man she'd never before met, he was better than anything she could have imagined. And for all of those years, there was a road block in her dreams by the name of Darby. Now Darby was out of the picture and Xavier was showing interest in her. It was the stuff romance novels were made of.
She remembered what her sister had said about jumping at the opportunity if it presented itself with Xavier. Well...she'd been a little more cruder, but still...her overall advice was on point. And Maya wasn't going to let a chance she'd secretly been wishing for, for several years now, pass her by.
"Lunch with you tomorrow would be great."

Growing up an introvert, Té Russ found solace in literary arts at an early age. She found reading to be a vehicle to broader horizons and writing a form of self-expression. She began writing love stories in her adolescent years as a way to expel her youthful thoughts of love into words. Since then she has gone from writing stories and thoughts of love in journals to attending college for journalism and falling in love, which has allowed those youthful words of love to blossom into a series of stories in her romance novels. Though she has an immense appreciation for the sheer smell that books collectively exert, she also has found balance to her introverted nature with adrenaline inducing activities. So if she does not have her nose pressed deeply into a book or her pen ticking through a pad, you may also find this mother of three baking some tasty treats, jumping out of airplanes, cheering her husband on at the top of her lungs at MMA fights, buzzing down the interstate on the back of motorcycles, or kayaking.

Excerpt:

Prologue
Mrs. Roundtree was my sixth grade teacher. Now, one thing you need to know about a twelve-year-old boy: anything can translate into sex. With Mrs. Roundtree, it was her smile. She had the sexiest smile. I don’t think Mrs. Roundtree meant to be sexy. She just was. She had a talent for making everyone feel special with her smile. But to me, her smile said, “I want you, Ivan.” I spent my days fantasizing about what it would be like to touch Mrs. Roundtree’s legs. She always wore skirts and dresses and those soft, full legs mesmerized me. I wanted to taste those full lips of hers, too.
Once, I won a school-wide spelling bee, and Mrs. Roundtree hugged me. I dreamt about her soft body from that day forward. She hugged me again when I lost at district. See, she did care. When the school year was over, she kissed me on the cheek for being such a good student.
She was smart, too. She interjected a little black history into every lesson, whether it was math, English, or science. She taught me that black people could be whatever they wanted to be.
I never forgot Mrs. Roundtree or her mind or her body.  She became the perfect model of a woman for me. A brown goddess with a good mind, a nice smile, nice legs, wide hips, and full breasts. She made me fall in love with women, brown women to be exact. So I think Mrs. Roundtree is to blame for me being the way I am. Yeah, it all started with her.
