A #BeenSoLong #Interview with Mona-Lisa Sanders

This is the final interview before the release of Been So Long 4 and today I'm chatting with Mona-Lisa!! Be sure to CLICK HERE to pre-order your copy of Been So Long 4 and enjoy the interview!!

****MAJOR Spoiler Alert for those who haven't read the other books in the series!!****

Mona-Lisa enters the room wearing a black, wrap-style dress and black heels. Her figure is enviable and she is breathtakingly pretty with bright green eyes and curly hair that frames her full face. She gives me a small smile as she shakes my hand and takes her seat.

Me: Welcome and thanks so much for chatting with me today!

Mona: Thanks for inviting me. I'm glad to be able to share my side of things.

Me: Okay, sounds good. First, will your husband be joining us today?

Mona: (Shakes her head.) No, just me.

Me: How is he? It's been a couple of weeks since we spoke.

Mona: (Smiles) He's wonderful.

Me: Good. Well, let's get to it. I have a lot of questions for you today from my readers.

Mona: I bet you do.

Me: Yes, and the first question is from Arlisha Myrie. She asks: Who do you really want, or better yet, who does your heart want--Corey of Wasif?

Mona: (Eyes widen a bit) Um, I want and love my husband.

Me: So you don't love Wasif?

Mona: I didn't say that.

Me: So you do love him?

Mona: A part of me will always love him. But I love Corey.

Me: You love Corey more?

Mona: (Visibly irritated) I love my husband. I want to be with him. Can we move on? You're starting to beat a dead horse here.

Me: Okay... Ms. Myrie also wants to know how it feels to have twins with different fathers.

Mona: It feels like I have 2 wonderful, exceptional sons who are complete gentlemen who happen to have different fathers. I mean, what is she getting at anyway?

Me: I'm just the messenger here.

Mona: Um-hmm. Next question.

Me: All right, her next question is, do you think your mom influenced the way you live your life or make decisions?

Mona: Well, yeah. Whose life isn't influenced by the people who raised them? Is her life influenced by her mother?

Me: Do you think your mom's influence was a negative one?

Mona: Have you met my mother? See anything positive there?

Me: Not really.

Mona: There's your answer.

Me: I see, um... Ms. Myrie asks: What is it about Wasif that has you head over heels for him...because he is so different from Corey.

Mona: I'm not head over heels for him. Next.

Me: But--

Mona: (Raises eyebrows) Next question, please.

Me: (I sigh) Okay, Ms. Myrie asks--

Mona: No, I'm done answering questions for Ms. Myrie. What'd she do, send you a book of questions? Let's move on.

Me: All right, uh... here's one from La'chacha Crawford. Do you find your life amusing? In other words, do you ever sit back and think about your life and laugh at the insanity of it all?

Mona: My life is my life. I don't find it amusing or crazy. I find it wonderful for the most part.

Me: So you don't find being in love with 2 men, having 4 kids divided among the same 2 men, and everything in between a bit crazy?

Mona: I'm not in love with 2 men.

Me: Okay, okay. Here's another question: um... Tonja Tate asked, and I quote, "Why do you have to be a 'ho' all the time?"

Mona: (Stares at me and then bursts into laughter) I'm not and have never been a ho. I have had long-term relationships with 2 men who loved me and took care of me. I, in turn, loved and took care of them. I am a mother, a wife, definitely not a ho. You wanna meet a ho, go dig my mother up.

Me: But don't you think you kind of take after her?

Mona: Hell. No.

Me: Okaaaaay... Moving on. La'chacha also would like to know why you don't have any friends.

Mona: Females tend to dislike me. (Shrugs) I have no idea why. Doesn't bother me. I don't trust many people anyway. My sister and I are close. I couldn't ask for a better friend than her.

Me: It's so good that you're close. I'm glad you reconnected.

Mona: (Smiles warmly): Me, too.

Me: (I return her smile) So, Nicole Sharon has a couple of questions. They are: Why aren't you in counseling? Where's your accountability partners?

Mona: Is she serious?

Me: I believe so.

Mona: (Releases a frustrated sigh) Are these folks readers or terrorists? Because all they've been doing is attacking me.

Me: I take it you don't want to answer her questions?

Mona: No, I'll answer them. I'm just saying... Tell her I'm fine.

Me: That's it?

Mona: That's it.

Me: Okay...

Mona: I think I want to answer Ms. Tyree's other questions now.

Me: Ms. Myrie?

Mona: Yeah, her.

Me: Okay. Here they are: Do you want anymore kids with Corey? Do you think you and Corey's mom will ever see eye to eye? It seems like your life is wrapped around your kids and your spouse and Wasif; what do you want to do for you? And is Wasif available since you're technically taken?

Mona: I'd love to give Corey a basketball team full of kids, but I'm not getting any younger. I think we'll stop at the four we have. As far as his mom, we get along fine as long as she leaves me alone. I'm not wrapped up in Wasif, for her information. I love to read and decorate and watch movies and make love to my man. Those are the things I do for myself. And as far as Wasif being available... I guess.

Me: You guess?

Mona: Yes, I guess.

Me: Well, there were a couple of questions about Corey, but I think we'll omit those.

Mona: (Smiles) Someone likes my hubby?

Me: Very much so.

Mona: I understand why. I'm glad he's mine. (Winks)

Me: (I chuckle) Is there anything you want to tell the readers about Been So Long 4?

Mona: Get ready.

A #BeenSoLong #Interview with Cleo Williams AKA Gina Grant

I'm back with another Been So Long Series interview!! This time I'm chatting with Mona-Lisa's sister, Cleo! Don't forget to pre-order your Kindle copy of the book. The price will increase on release day!!

Cleo enters the room with a bright smile on her face. Her mass of hair is tamed into a ponytail. She is wearing a bright yellow sundress that complements her bronze complexion, and yellow sandals. I rise to greet her and her smile is infectious as she pulls me into a hug. She is absolutely lovely. As she takes her seat, I see her husband standing by the door. He is tall and strikingly handsome with piercing green eyes.

Me: Hi, Cleo. It's so good to see you.

Cleo: Thanks. It's a pleasure to chat with you today.

Me: Awesome. First, would your husband like to join us?

Cleo: (Looks at her husband who smiles and shakes his head) No, he's just here to support me. He doesn't want to join in on the interview.

Me: Okay, I'm glad he's here, too. Now, would you prefer to be called Gina or G rather than Cleo?

Cleo: Cleo is fine.

Me: All right... well, let's get to it. The first question is from reader La'chacha Crawford. She asks, were you scared running away at such a young age?

Cleo: (Nods) Yes, I was petrified. But I just needed some relief. I was so tired of my life. I thought the fear was worth it to live what I hoped would be a better life.

Me: But things didn't turn out quite the way you planned, did they?

Cleo: (Glances at her husband) Not exactly.

Me: Do you regret running away now?

Cleo: (Sighs) No, I don't.

Me: Really? After all you went through with Aaron's father?

Cleo: (Reclines in her seat and clasps her hands in her lap) Well, that was a hard time for me, and in a lot of ways, a much worse life than I had with my mother, but I have my son because of it. I met my husband because of my decision to run. The best things in my life came from that choice I made as a child. Sometimes we have to go through a storm to get to our oasis. Scott, our family. That's my oasis, my paradise.

Me: That's so beautiful. Ms. Crawford also asks if you sought out someone like Scott on purpose. Someone who is the opposite of Aaron's father.

Cleo: When we met, Scott found me, not the other way around. The only thing I was seeking was safety. God saw fit to give it to me in the form of love. (She and her husband smile at each other)

Me: You're a lucky woman.

Cleo: I'm a blessed woman.

Me: Amen to that. It must feel good to know a love like that.

Cleo: it's the best feeling in the world.

Me: Beautiful. Well, how are your kids? Especially Aaron.

Cleo: Wonderful. I have the greatest kids in the world, but what mom doesn't think that?

Me: (I chuckle) Right. Here's another question: You and your sister are so close. How was it reconnecting with her after all those years.

Cleo: It was a dream come true. Leaving her was the hardest thing for me. She is so important to me. She took care of me when she could barely take care of herself.

Me: You know, a lot of people don't like her.

Cleo: I know. She's not perfect, but who of us is? You know why I think people tend to dislike her?

Me: No, why?

Cleo: Because they see more of themselves in her than they care to admit.

Me: Really?

Cleo: Yes.

Me: So you don't think those two gorgeous men she keeps dangling have anything to do with it?

Cleo (Smiles) Maybe.

Me: Well, I don't want to keep you. Let's wrap up with this question: Is there anything you want readers to know about Been So Long 4?

Cleo: Hmm, well... Just that they can expect more drama. More of what they loved about the other books in the series.

Me: Sounds good.

A #BeenSoLong #Interview with Dr. Wasif Masood

Today I'm interviewing Dr. Wasif Masood from the Been So Long Series in anticipation of the release of Been So Long 4.

CLICK HERE to pre-order it today!!!!

***This interview contains spoilers for those who have not read the other books in the series***

Wasif enters the room with a smile and shakes my hand before settling in his seat. He is tall, thin and strikingly handsome with a neatly-trimmed beard and clad in slacks and an oxford shirt.

Me: Wasif, thanks so much for joining us. How are you?

Wasif: (nods slightly) My pleasure. And I'm great. You?

Me: I'm doing good (Especially with you sitting in front of me. Whew!) well, let's get right to it, shall we?

Wasif: Sure.

Me: The number one question from readers is: When are you going to let Mona go?

Wasif: Well, I have a question for them.

Me: Okay?

Wasif: I'd like to know if they've ever been in love and if so, how easy would it be for them to let it go?

Me: That's a good question. So, you still love her?

Wasif: I don't think you can stop loving someone if you really and truly love them, so yes.

Me: On behalf of reader Shan Mahogany, what's the appeal? In other words, why do you love her?

Wasif: Because being with her makes me happy.

Me: All right, I see.

Wasif: I know you don't get it, but there's a bond between us. A connection I really can't explain myself.

Me: Okay... well, here's the next burning question from readers. A lot of the ladies would like to date you. Are you on the market, so to speak, since you still have feelings for Mona-Lisa?

Wasif: (Flashes me a smile)

Me: You get this a lot, huh?

Wasif: (Chuckles) Um... I do. Just let the ladies know nothing is impossible. I enjoy a good date from time to time.

Me: They'll be glad to hear that. So, reader Sharyn Gray wants to know what made you want to lead a double life?

Wasif: (Furrows his brow) Double life?

Me: I think she's referring to you continuing your relationship with Mona during your marriage.

Wasif: (Lifts brows)  Oh? Well... It wasn't a conscious decision. I loved her and needed her. I-uh-couldn't let her go.

Me: I see. What about your wife?

Wasif: Ex-wife.

Me: I'm sorry, ex-wife. Did you consider her feelings?

Wasif: (Frowns) Of course I did. I never threw anything in her face. I respected her.

Me: Do you think you respected Mona?

Wasif: I have always given her the utmost respect! What is this, anyway? An interview or an interrogation? (He has raised his voice and is visibly angry.)

Me: I'm sorry if I've upset you. I'm simply trying to understand. And I'm trying to help the readers understand.

Wasif: Can we move on?

Me: Sure. Ms. Mahogany asks: Did you get engaged to Ann just to make Mona jealous?

Wasif: (Eyes widen) What? No, I genuinely cared about her and wanted things to work out.

Me: But they didn't?

Wasif: No, unfortunately. She's moved on. I'm happy for her.

Me: Good. Another question from Ms. Mahogany--

Wasif: She asks a lot of questions.

Me: (I chuckle) Yes, she does. This time she wants to know how your relationship with your parents is, specifically your father?

Wasif: Things could be better with my father. My mother and I are as close as we can be,

Me: How are your kids?

Wasif: They're good, great. Look, I didn't mean to raise my voice earlier, but it felt like I was being made out to be the bad guy or something. I'm not. You can't choose who you love. I made the best of a bad situation. I didn't run from my responsibilities.

Me: What about Corey?

Wasif: (Straightens in his chair) What about him?

Me: Do you think you've treated him fairly?

Wasif: What is that supposed to mean? He shouldn't even be in our lives. He took Mona from me, I--(shakes his head) this is not what I came here for. We're supposed to be talking about Been So Long 4.

Me: Um... Okay, what do you want to tell the readers about Been So Long 4.

Wasif: (Looking a bit defeated) Read it. Just... Read it.

#SampleSunday 3 - SEPTEMBER (The Christina Dandridge Story)

Here's the final sample from SEPTEMBER before its release. Enjoy!!

Mama had to pry Kenny’s arms from around her neck and when she stood to her feet, I could see the wet spot on her blouse left behind by Kenny’s tears. Kenny’s cries became shrill and louder as Mama backed away from us, moving toward the car door. Grandma Orene stepped forward, and when she wrapped her thick fingers around Kenny’s little arm, his knees buckled and landed on the gravel of the makeshift driveway that made up most of our grandmother’s front yard. His cries transformed from shrill sobs to pained wails.
I reached for him but Grandma Orene shook her head. “You let me take care of him, sugar,” she said warmly. “Now come on here, big boy. I got some cake in here and I think you’ll like it. It’s chocolate. Your mama told me you love chocolate cake.”
Kenny’s wailing stopped almost the second she spoke the words “chocolate cake”. His wet eyes widened and he stood to his feet.
Our grandmother turned to me and winked. “Let’s go get us some cake, Chrissy.”
I smiled as I followed her into the old, paint-stripped house.

***

Grandma Orene’s house was larger than the little house in the woods where Kenny and I had spent our lives up until that point, but it was full of furniture and knick-knacks. It smelled like food and was so warm, much warmer than our house. It was an old house, but the floors didn’t creak like at our house and the air didn’t seep in under the doors and the windows didn’t rattle when the wind blew. The furniture was old, but not raggedy. The couch sagged but was covered with a clean quilt. The coffee table was chipped, but there wasn’t a speck of dirt on it. The house was lived-in, but not run down. It had taken on the characteristics of a true home rather than just a building.
When I walked into the kitchen and saw all of that food on the table, I couldn’t believe it. I had never seen so much food in one place and intended for one meal in my whole life! Fried chicken, greens, pinto beans, cornbread, boiled okra, potato salad, and of course, a triple-stacked chocolate cake with chocolate icing. I looked over at Kenny whose eyes had grown so wide, I thought they were going to pop out of his head.
“We gon’ eat all this?” he asked excitedly.
“As much of it as you want,” Grandma Orene answered. “Now, go wash your hands over at the sink. We gon’ eat soon as your Aunt Joyce and your Uncle Larry get back.”
I took Kenny’s hand and inched toward the sink. “Who is they?” I asked.
“They your daddy’s sister and brother. Now go on and wash them hands.”
“Where they at?” I said as I turned the water on in the faucet and lathered my hands with soap.
“Down the road a bit. They be back shortly.”
I nodded. “You my daddy’s Mama, right?”
She smiled at me and nodded. “Yes, I am, smart girl.”
“Where his daddy at?”
A sadness swiftly filled her eyes.

#SampleSunday 2 - SEPTEMBER (The Christina Dandridge Story- a Been So Long companion novel)

Here's another sample from my forthcoming novel, SEPTEMBER  (The Christina Dandridge Story - a Been So Long companion novel). Enjoy!!

We went to live with our father’s mother, Grandma Orene Greene. Grandma Orene was tall and big and dark and downright scary to look at. She looked like she enjoyed whooping kids and those big hands didn’t look like they’d show us any mercy if we got out of line. I was so scared when Mama pulled us out of the car and stood us in the yard in front of her, I almost peed on myself.
But then she opened her wide mouth and gave us a smile so warm that I couldn’t help but smile right back at her. Then she started laughing—a big, belly laugh. And I laughed, too.
“Lord, I ain’t seent these two babies in so long, I almost forgot how they looked! Beautiful chirrin’, they are. Just look at ‘em. Just like two little peaches with that orange skin. And those green eyes! Y’all come on over here and give your granny a hug.”
I was the first to move. I walked over to her and let her wrap her big, heavy, warm arms around me. I will never forget how she smelled—like talcum powder and fried chicken. From the moment I met Grandma Orene and felt what it was like to be in her arms, I fell in love with her.
My brother was always shy and I think our grandmother’s imposing appearance frightened him, too. After she let me go and waited for Kenny to walk over to her, he just stood there with his head hung low. I could tell he was about to cry. My first thought was to call him a cry-baby, and then I realized he was just four and all he knew was our Mama. He wanted to be with her and so did I. But if she had to leave, I had a feeling we were going to be in good hands with Grandma Orene.
I walked over to him and wrapped my arm around his shoulder. “Come on, Kenny Ray,” I whispered. “It’s all right.”
Kenny Ray shook me off of him and ran to our mother. He gripped her skinny legs and cried and shouted, “Mommy, don’t go!”
Mama looked down at him with tears in her eyes. She rubbed her hand over his hair and then squatted down to face him. She pulled him into her arms and whispered, “Be a big boy, Kenny Ray. I’m just going to bring Daddy home. I’ll be back before you know it.”

#TBT - Been So Long

For Throwback Thursday, I thought I'd share an excerpt from what has been, and still is, my top selling book--Been So Long. Enjoy and feel free to grab a copy!

In Little Rock, I slowed as I passed the office of Cardiothoracic Associates of Central Arkansas. It was the office that Dr. Wasif Masood shared with Dr. Fahad Masood, his father. Both were successful cardiothoracic surgeons, well respected in Arkansas. I slowed even more when I saw Wasif’s shiny, midnight blue Range Rover. I ached a little. I wished I could walk in there and surprise him. I wished I was his wife. But I wasn’t his wife and wishing was a waste of time.
The blaring of car horns behind me snapped me out of my thoughts and made me realize that I’d come to a complete stop and was blocking traffic. I don’t know why, but I hit my turn signal and pulled into the parking lot at Wasif’s office. Maybe I just felt bold or maybe I’d lost my mind, but for whatever reason, I found myself parking in front of the office. I pulled on a pair of Fendi sunglasses, grabbed my Gucci purse, and headed into the office.
I smiled as I walked through the nearly packed waiting area and approached the receptionist’s window. A blond-headed young lady returned my smile and said, “Can I help you?” Her southern accent was thick, almost comical.
I nodded. “Yes, I don’t have an appointment or anything, but I was wondering if I could see Dr. Wasif Masood. He was my mother’s surgeon, and I need to ask him some questions.” It was a believable lie.
“Oh, well, what’s your mother’s name?”
“Just tell him that Mo Dandridge needs to speak with him. He’ll remember me.”
She shrugged and gave me a skeptical look. “Ok, but even if he agrees to see you, it may take awhile. He has a lot of appointments this morning.” Wanna bet?
I nodded. “I understand.”
I took the only vacant seat, which was right underneath the flat-screen TV that hung on the wall, and smiled at the rainbow of patients in the waiting area. I’d only been sitting and waiting for two minutes when she told me that he was ready to see me. I hadn’t even had time to flip through the magazine I’d picked up. I thanked her as she led me to his office.
“Thanks, Paula,” Wasif said to the receptionist. “Ms. Dandridge, how can I help you?”
The room smelled of the familiar scent of his cologne. I waited for him to close and lock the door, and then I smiled and whispered, “I really need your help, doctor. I missed you.”
With wide eyes, he said, “Mo, what in the world are you doing here? What if my father sees you here? I’ll never hear the end of it.”
I pointed to the huge window behind his cluttered desk. “Then you’d better close the blinds.”
He nodded. “You’re right.” As he turned and walked to the window, he said, “Mo, you’ve got to go. I’ll call you later.”
I looked around the office as I stepped out of my heels. Behind his huge mahogany desk sat an empty executive chair. There were framed diplomas on the ecru wall from The University of Arkansas and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. I could see a picture frame lying flat on the bookcase beside me. Probably a picture of his wife and daughters. I laid my purse in the burgundy leather chair in front of his desk, and when he turned back around, I’d stripped out of my skinny jeans and blouse and was wearing nothing but my matching pink underwear. I tilted my head to the side and gave him an innocent look. “I should go?”
He bucked his eyes as I slowly walked towards him. “Um…Mo…”
I sat on top of the desk without bothering to move any of the papers. I grabbed his hand and pulled him closer to me. He smiled. “W…what are you doing, babe?”
I kissed him softly. “I told you. I missed you, doctor,” I whined.
He nodded as I loosened his tie, unbuttoned his collar, and kissed his neck. “Uh…I missed you, too, but y…you can’t just show up like this, babe.”
I shrugged. “Ok, doctor. I’ll go then.” I tried to slide off of his desk, but he blocked me.
He leaned over and kissed me as he pulled his dress shirt out of his pants. “No, Ms. Dandridge. First, you’ve got to finish what you’ve started.”
“What about your patients, Dr. Masood?”
He smiled as he laid me back on his desk. “They can wait. This is an emergency.”
